Before the current U.S. diamond boom afforded him a job at his old trade, Koltanowski taught chess to children in Milwaukee's public playgrounds. "Chess," he says, "is important in elementary schooling. Youngsters are usually not yet ready for team play, are more interested in expressing themselves. Chess gives them an outlet.
