The “Yes We Can” video, which features the Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am, Scarlett Johansson, and other celebrities chanting Obama’s New Hampshire primary speech, has popped up all over the internet. From the feigned emotion on these celebrities’ faces, one would think they were reading from the Bible or Shakespeare, not from a relatively well written but somewhat politically banal stump speech. Yelena S. Mironova ’10 thinks that if everyone always said what they thought, the world would be a huge New York subway station, and no one would like that. Polite half-statements are the kool-aid that keeps everyone’s tongues as bright as their spirits, and their minds blissfully unaware of their neighbor’s intentions to step on their head in the climb up the social/academic/banking ladder. Her cartoons will, hopefully, be a bit less confusing than the blurb you just read, and maybe a bit more uplifting. Judge for yourself...

And it's not just grotesque fantasy. Now You're One of Us, which was originally published in 1993, as divorce rates in Japan were soaring, is also high-wire social commentary. It's a parodic rebuke of traditional cultural attitudes that subsume individual welfare for the sake of a family unit...
