...airline passengers during this busy traveling summer had qualms about flying aboard a DC-10, last week's drumbeat of new troubles gave them no consolation. Eight days after United Airlines Flight 232 crash-landed in Sioux City, Iowa, killing 111 of its 286 passengers and crew, a Korean Air Lines DC- 10 carrying 199 people plowed into an olive grove near Tripoli, Libya. As was the case in Sioux City, a majority of those aboard the KAL flight survived, but as many as 80 were killed. The same day in Los Angeles a United DC-10 had another close...

...members from each social group dump on somebody else. Mookie (Lee) hurls derogatory anti-Italian comments on the boss' son Pino (John Turturro), who insults him back with just as many racist stereotypes. Then the film cuts then to the policeman, who insults a Hispanic youth, who insults the Korean family who has recently opened up a vegetable stand on the block. But since the lab equipment was not accurate enough to measure below that level, this was "equivalent to a finding of no Alar," says Dan Gunter, executive director of Florida's department of citrus. Says he: "Alar is not used on grapefruit." The Korean government declared U.S. grapefruit safe, but American growers fear the sour taste may linger...

...Story, full of Officer Krupkes and kindly store owners. At first, the dilemmas are predictably pastel too: populist cliches brought to life by an attractive cast. Even the racial epithets have a jaunty tinge, as in a series of antibrotherhood jokes made by blacks, Italians, Hispanics, white cops and Korean grocers -- the film's best sequence. On this street there are no crack dealers, hookers or muggers, just a 24-hour deejay named Mister Senor Love Daddy (Sam Jackson), who punctuates every mellow bellow with "And that's the truth, Ruth...
