Strange things began to happen when Northwest Airlines petitioned the South Korean government last July for permission to increase its Tokyo-Seoul service from four to five round trips weekly. Korean government agents raided Northwest's Seoul office and seized its records, returned them only after the U.S. embassy protested. The authorities then turned down Northwest's application, grumbled that the airline was"pro-Japanese and anti-Korean." Reason: all its Tokyo-Seoul stewardesses are Japanese. Hinted one Seoul official: "Why not employ Korean stewardesses?" Last week Northwest announced that it will hire one or two Korean stewardesses...
