Among the flood of classical LP records that made the year more musical, there were many standouts. The following choice of 1954's best is made on the basis of unusual interest in music or performance: Berg: Violin Concerto (Louis Krasner; Cleveland Orchestra conducted by Artur Rodzinsky; Columbia). The first recording of a major 20th century work. Dubbed from old 78-r.p.m. disks, but a devoted performance...

...bridge connecting Communist China with the free British colony of Hong Kong last week walked two gaunt, hollow-eyed newsmen. After 18 months' imprisonment, NBC Correspondent Richard Applegate and I.N.S. Correspondent Donald Dixon were released by the Chinese Communists. With them was a U.S. merchant marine officer, Ben Krasner, captured with them while they were cruising on Applegate's sailboat Kert in international waters west of Hong Kong...

Berg: Violin Concerto (Louis Krasner; Cleveland Orchestra conducted by Artur Rodzinsky; Columbia). One of the meatiest, most listenable concertos of the century, played by the man who introduced it in 1936. Written in the twelve-tone technique, it combines all the nervous subtleties of that idiom with the undeniable decadence of Berg's own style, but still appeals strongly to the ear. More complex (and less appealing) is the piece on the reverse side: another great modern...

...Krasner played the concerto twice--no easy task since it is one of the most difficult works in the repertoire. He exhibited great manual dexterity, backed up by a full, rich tone. Having no definite conception of how the music should be played, I can say very little about the interpretation. However, there did seem to be a lack of rapport between soloist and accompanist. The quiet passion which marked Krasner's playing was far removed from his wife's cool, almost mechanical pianism. I don't know which style is valid, but one of them was certainly...
