Jonathan's mother starts a perfervid affair with an American seaman, Jim (Kris Kristofferson), which her son also observes intently through his knothole. Jonathan liked Jim when they first met, thought him strong, worldly and commanding, but soon has a new viewpoint. Mom's sailor may have been fine on the ocean, where he was part of "the pure and perfect order of things," but away from his rightful place, he becomes an imperfect creature, a subject of jealousy and contempt who must be done away with. Jonathan consults the Chief, who had previously persuaded his minions...

...only other song written by Walker is a bizarre number called "Pissin' in the Wind," which starts out parodying Kris Kristofferson, proceeds to self-parody, tosses in a few jokes about Walker's music buddies Guy Clark and Gary Nunn, and ends by poking fun at the folk singers of the sixties: "The answer my friend is just pissin' in the wind." It's pretty self-indulgent and not as funny as Walker would like to think...

From the sound of it, A Star Is Born might just be the death of Singer-Actor Kris Kristofferson. "I'll be a better actor as a result of this, but I'm not sure that I'll even give a damn," says the weary performer, considering the rigors of working with Barbra Streisand. The film features Barbra in the part played by Janet Gaynor back in 1937 and Judy Garland 17 years later. Streisand is not just the leading lady, but the executive producer as well, and the shooting schedule has been dawn-to-dark frantic...

...often no one's fault. It takes the most indefatigable kind of strength--like what grows into Alice--to do something about this. All filmed in the instant consumer glare of Tucson, Phoenix, Johnny Carson and potato chips. At the Beacon Hill, with a pretty but stony Kris Kristofferson--if he hadn't written "Me and Bobby McGee." I'd never forgive him, because he damn near ruins this movie...

There are times when the movie teeters on the edge of commercial cuteness. The relationship between Alice and son verges sometimes on the Paper Moonish; the romance that develops between her and a terribly nice, understanding rancher (Kris Kristofferson) is too perfect a solution to her problems. But Writer Getchell's plot line has plenty of unmarked curves in it, and it twists past a curiously mixed group of characters who hitch briefly onto Alice's odyssey. Director Scorsese, having proved adept with the claustrophobia of a big-city ghetto in Mean Streets, demonstrates an ability to discover...
