...advent of Chick Webb and Gene Krupa has revolutionized the style of every rhythm section in the country, so that today even a mediocre band like Jan Savitt's can cut any of the old Armstrong or Henderson groups as for as pure rhythm is concerned. Compare Fletcher's Sugarfoot Stomp with Savitt's and see what I mean...

...thing unusual about the band is the way they picked up a rhythm style right away that very few white bands can ever do, and that Gene Krupa's gang has taken over two years to learn: namely, a nice easy bounce on the Jimmy Lunceford style. Good swing (and for that matter, good dance music) should never be strained and pushed in the "killer" style. Relaxed rhythm is imperative to any kind of good jazz--and Donahue has it. Junie Mays (piano--also some excellent arrangements), Bill Hoffman (bass) and Charlie Carroll on drums do a sweet job besides...

...opening there on April 1. Since this contract was signed before Shaw left upstage, it's possible that it is more wishful thinking. However, if he does put in an appearance, it's going to be interesting to see how the trade bears up after having Fats Waller, Gene Krupa, Jimmy Dorsey, Count Basie, and Woody Herman--good bands all. Notes between the notes: The All-Star record that Metronome Magazine in conjunction with Columbia Record Corp. is putting out next week will be very interesting from many standpoints. Besides having the winners of Metronome's Band Poll playing in one band, it will settle the argument about Gene Krupa's drumming. When Krupa left Goodman, he was a brilliant show-off--and therefore a lousy band drummer. Since then, all the critics that have given his band any attention at all have agreed that Gene has changed into one of the most unostentatious and best band drummers around. Since...

...short time ago, this column stuck its neck out to say that Gene Krupa's was the coming band of the year. We like our position even more after having heard his new record of "Three Little Words." As a matter of fact, after having heard him on the air the other night, we feel positively smug about the whole thing. Gene's band sounds more like Ellington than any other white band playing today...
