Representing his fellow Ruhr industrialists, Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach was taken on a tour of Turkey's mines and factories and lavishly feted. He promised to spend 71 million marks ($17 million) on a new blast furnace that would more than double Turkey's pig-iron production.
