Then, with a Kubrick-like air of mystery, Reznor withdrew into the cocoon of his velvet-walled home, and for the next five years was scarcely heard from. Emerging from his gloomy exile, he has a changed perspective and quite a story to tell about his years cloistered away. And he is packing a few surprises, for The Fragile is not just more of the same old musical Sturm und Drang. "The Fragile is a journey out from a place of desperation," says Reznor. "There are threads of optimism...

...often been said that Stanley Kubrick has a tendency to put mood ahead of content in his films. But while such a predilection for atmosphere would be a fault in other directors, in Kubrick it was a gift, and in Eyes Wide Shut this gift comes shining through. A sort of Everyman for a sexually liberated age, Eyes Wide Shut features Tom Cruise, a sex symbol himself, as its wandering pilgrim. And the overwhelming tone of the film is certainly one of wandering. Progressing from one self-contained vignette to another, the movie moves from a theme and variations motif...

...When a movie is neither funny, entertaining, deep, sexy nor meaningful, it has to work awfully hard to keep your attention. Kubrick's final film was an exercise in mediocrity. It was supposed to be his thunderous masterpiece, a rousing conclusion to a brilliant career. But alas, it was hyped to no end and the expectations clouded reality. ...interesting to note how many readers expected negative comments about the Cruise-Kidman cover because the couple appeared to be nude. But not even graphic copulation could save this clunker. Stanley Kubrick spent 53 months on this project, which he had wanted to produce for 28 years. I hope his demise was not triggered by seeing the end result. ARLINE MCFARLANE West Vancouver...

...discussing unfinished projects by director Stanley Kubrick [NOTEBOOK, July 12], you noted that AI, a science-fiction film about artificial intelligence, might have been a better film for his finale than Eyes Wide Shut. But the fact that Kubrick had already made a trilogy of sci-fi flicks (Dr. Strangelove, 2001 and A Clockwork Orange) is probably why he opted to do something different. Kubrick virtually reinvented each genre in which he worked, whether it was a horror film like The Shining, an antiwar movie like Full Metal Jacket or a science-fiction feature. It is not surprising that...
