Russian literature, a powerful weapon in the Russian people's struggle for liberation from the Czars, was plunged into confusion after the establishment of the Soviet state. Many famous authors (Kuprin, Bunin) went into exile voluntarily; disillusionment led others (Yesenin, Mayakovsky) to suicide.
