Great literature often concerns self-discovery through encounter with the Other. In Heart of Darkness, Marlow meets Colonel Kurtz and realizes that a thin line separates the values of civilization and insanity. In Moby-Dick,this guy's chasing around a big whale, but the whale is really a part of him, or at least that's what my Cliffs Notes say. In the Famed "street person episode" of "Diff'rent Strokes," Arnold encounters an epileptic homeless mime, and learns that deep inside, we all have motor co-ordination problems. All of these characters learn and grow through their brush...
Playwright Wendy Wasserstein exudes a fuzzy warmness that belies an ambitious and successful career in the theater. Her play Uncommon Women and Others, starring Jill Eikenberry, Swoosie Kurtz, and Glenn Close, was produced off-Broadway when she was 27. She received half a dozen awards for The Heidi Chronicles five years ago, including the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award (the first ever given to a woman dramatist without a male collaborator). Her latest, The Sisters Rosensweig, which received an Outer Critics Circle Award and Tony nomination on Broadway, opens in Boston today. In a conversation with The Harvard Crimson...
...film is more than just a clever satire of media overkill. Ritchie assembles a vivid, sharply drawn gallery of small-town characters: Beau Bridges as Wanda's unwilling co-conspirator, a hardhat burdened with a messy past and a loony wife (Swoosie Kurtz); Elizabeth Ruscio as the rival mom, no less competitive but not as imaginative; and Matt Frewer as Wanda's drudge of a lawyer. All that and a bouncy country score by Lucy Simon too. True or not, it's positively terrific...
...Conrad in tone. Black Dogs conjures forth the same malign essence as Heart of Darkness. The two novels generate the same suspense, as the readers churn through the pages to reveal the secret of the one incisive encounter. The black dogs of the title fulfill the function of Kurtz, revealing for an instant the black heart of mankind, the seed of savagery we all contain. Most of all, McEwan's work reflects the powerful, emotive, and yet strangely rambling, subdued prose of Heart of Darkness...
...interlopers, a misfit minority. This gay-straight conflict, subtly mused on, lifts Terrence McNally's LIPS TOGETHER, TEETH APART beyond tragicomic tone poetry about the lonely vagaries of wedlock. Since the play opened last month off-Broadway, the foursome have been exquisitely played by Nathan Lane, Anthony Heald, Swoosie Kurtz and Christine Baranski. Alas, both actresses depart this week for other commitments. The replacements are estimable -- Roxanne Hart for Kurtz, Deborah Rush for Baranski -- but it is hard to imagine that the emotional journey, all around the world on one sun deck, can be the same. -- W.A.H...
