...sneak attackers were units of the Viet Cong 9th Division, and their quarry was an 1,110-man force of the U.S. 25th Infantry Division's 1st Brigade, which was setting up a powerful artillery base at Suoi Kut, only seven miles from the Cambodian border. The Communists hoped to even an old score: last March the men of the 1st Brigade had killed 647 soldiers of the 9th Division at nearby Suoi Tre in the biggest single one-day victory of the war. The Viet Cong also hoped to catch the 1st unprepared, since the U.S. infantrymen...
...They insist 'to this day that Abraham Lincoln should have accepted their King Mong-kut's timely offer of elephants in 1862. Regretfully, Lincoln explained to the King that the U.S. climate did not "favor the multiplication of the elephant." It is possible, nonetheless, that if the Union had been able to field a pachydermous panzer division, the U.S. Civil War might have been foreshortened...
This stuff is available only by mail from some gentleman whose company makes exotic industrial lubricants (and who is a hi-fi bug on the sly). The turntable itself is a re-worked Rek-O-Kut N33H, the motor-board which Bruce has sawed in half, suspends the motor separately from the table to reduce the rumble even below its already low figure. A special belt had to be used to drive the table, since the one supplied by Rek-O-Kut was not adaptable for such use. A sheet of copper lies under the whole unit, grounded by special...
Grass Cutter. Well ahead of spring's burgeoning, the United States Rubber Co. announced that "Kem-Kut," its new chemical growth inhibitor (maleic hydrazide) can slow down a fast growing lawn for a whole season. Mixed with water and sprayed on the most aggressive turf, Kem-Kut slows cell division. The grass stays green but grows no more than it does through a normal winter. Largescale application of Kem-Kut requires a power sprayer that few amateur lawn-tenders are likely to own. But, with only a hand spray, a man can slow up the grass around flower beds...
...Turkish brigade (5,000 men) is led by Brigadier General Tahsin Yazici, who likes to twit British war correspondents with such remarks as, "Yes, I remember your General Townshend well. We took him prisoner at Kut-el-Amara [in 1916]." Last week Yazici's smart, tightly disciplined Turks were thrown in to hold the line the R.O.K.s abandoned east of Kaechon. Estimated Turkish casualties at week's end: 500. A U.S. doctor said it seemed that a Turk waited until he had at least three wounds before he reported to the medics...
