...Texas supports four bowl games (Cotton, Bluebonnet, Sun, Prairie View), three professional franchises, 30 college teams-and many of the nation's football bookmakers. The eight teams in the Southwest Conference* have produced some 65 All-Americas, are the breeding grounds for such superb professionals as Yale Lary, Kyle Rote, John David Crow and Bobby Layne. Still, a national championship is only a distant memory in Texas. Perhaps the biggest reason is the fratricidal nature of the bruising Southwest Conference, in which each team must play all the others each season-a harrowing schedule from which it is nearly...
...accelerated surely into its planned orbit. Strapped in the capsule instead of a man sat an oblong box that performed most of an astronaut's functions: it consumed oxygen, excreted carbon dioxide and water vapor, and it also talked-feeding the recorded voice of NASA Communications Engineer Howard Kyle into a microphone to test the Mercury communication system. Out of a porthole and periscope peered two cameras. Special instruments recorded the assorted stimuli that would have assaulted a human astro naut: vicious vibration and gut-wrenching G forces. Automatic apparatus controlled the capsule's flight and descent...
Mandingo (by Jack Kirkland; based on Kyle Onstott's novel) makes mere plot seem an anachronism, it has so much erupting at such lurid levels, so much more belching forth when nothing more seems possible. The scene is an Alabama plantation, with Franchot Tone as an aging, tippling, crotchety slave breeder and seller. Among his slaves are drunkards, onetime bedmates, "rheumatiz boys," and three Mandingos (so named for their ancestral African tribe), who to preserve their pure...
...Died. Kyle S. Crichton, 64, writer and editor who once turned out social significance with his left hand (as an editor of the Communist New Masses under the name Robert Forsythe) and social insignificance (as an editor of Collier's under his own name) with his other hand; of a heart attack; in New York. A sponsor of literary pink teas during the '30s, Crichton's political sympathies were shattered by the Stalin-Hitler pact. Turning from somber Karl Marxism to zany Marx Brotherism, he biographed Groucho et al, along with other nonpoliticos such...
