Suddenly, here comes 4AD, their record label, under the aegis of big bad Elektra, with a two-CD compilation. It's being marketed as some kind of hornbook for those unbaptized in the waters of the Isla de Encanta, but this is hardly an effective form of proselytization. Brand New, you see, is the final version of an album that should have hit stores two years ago, before shake-ups at their label and changes in their management forced a series of delays. The group's visibility, never higher than after 1993's multi-platinum Very Necessary album, was suddenly limited to guerrilla appearances on benefit albums, ill-starred soundtracks (anyone remember Kazaam?) and the inevitable MTV Party...
...Gabriel, Boy George and Cher all showed up. Linda Evangelista and NAOMI CAMPBELL made rare runway appearances. Even other designers, including Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfeld, Donna Karan and Miuccia Prada, came to offer support and perhaps to see what DONATELLA VERSACE, who has taken over design duties at the label since her brother's death, could do with a needle and thread. No one seemed disappointed--though it's hard to imagine anyone's being critical in such an environment.
