What's remarkable about Boyz II Men is that its unabashed romanticism never bogs down the members' considerable musical skill. Motown is their label, and with their harmonies and look-alike outfits, they hark back to the classic Motown vocal groups like the Temptations. The Boyz released their debut CD just after the Milli Vanilli lip-synching scandal. It was a cynical time for pop music. Vanilla Ice had a best-selling pseudo-rap album; New Kids on the Block had gone multiplatinum. Were there any real singers left? Was everyone as fake as Rob and Fab's hair extensions...
...time since then, things haven't got any easier. Such bands as Pearl Jam and Fugazi may be able to maintain their position without submitting to every industry demand for videos or major-label distribution. But for the most part, and with ever greater efficiency, the new is discovered, distributed and disarmed. (Hear that, Seattle; Athens, Georgia; Austin, Texas? Make one new move, and we'll send a planeload of advance scouts.) That in turn makes it harder to come up with much that's new. ("Unless people start wearing lumber," says the performer and fashion watcher Sandra Bernhard, "there...
...handiwork of Sergei Mavrodi, who is in his late 30s. Overweight and partial to expensive Italian suits, Mavrodi called himself an entrepreneur -- the label covers a lot of ground in Moscow these days -- and recently appeared in a newspaper survey as the sixth richest man in the country. He launched the MMM fund in 1992 with 100,000 rubles, worth about $50 today. Like all pyramid-type schemes, his snowballing effort worked well for a time. Shares priced in February at 1,600 rubles (the equivalent then of $1) traded at 105,000 rubles two weeks ago. Mavrodi apparently...
...lyrics by Courtney Love (rocker Kurt Cobain's widow). Arrested Development's brand-new CD, Zingalamaduni, is smart, political hip-hop (one song deals with abortion). Says lead rapper Speech: "It's important to get men and women expressing themselves about issues together." Steve Yegelwel of Atlantic/Seed Records, a label with several coed bands, says the phenomenon is the start of a new era: "It's kind of like the beginning of punk...
...experience at the Concertgebouw, rises to become the orchestra's principal conductor at just 35 years of age. A little more than 25 years later, the dream comes to an end when Bernard Haitink decided to end his celebrated tenure with the Concertgebouw. Now, six years later, the classical label Philips documents Haitink's discographic achievements by compiling and re-releasing six of his symphonic cycles, namely Brahms, Beethoven, Bruckner, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, and Schumann...
