Thumbing through his mail about a year ago, A. F. of L.'s President William Green came across a letter from Princeton, N. J. The missive suggested that in these troubled times Mr. Green could do himself and the public a service by writing a book on Labor's role in democracy. Author Green's views on C. I. O. are strictly A. F. of L.: that C. I. O. is the rotten fruit of John Lewis' personal, destructive ambition. True to A. F. of L. tradition, Author Green insists that Labor's base and strength are in the shop, that political activity must be nonpartisan and secondary. But, surveying the corporate structure of modern business, he worriedly notes "points of control which Labor cannot reach by collective bargaining alone," goes on to preach Government regulation (and even ownership of railroads), when & where private enterprise "cannot alone adjust itself...
Bolsheviks & Scandinavians. This was diplomatically crude work, since the negotiations were still supposed to be in the confidential stage. But in Moscow the Finnish Delegation, headed by former Premier Dr. Juho K. Paasikivi and Labor Leader V. A. Tanner, patiently kept the negotiations going and even dined with Dictator Stalin while the whole Scandinavian press began to shriek alarm and mobilized Finland grimly strengthened her defenses. The notion that war profiteers do play a part in drawing the country into war, and the idea that a war crisis may be used as a pretext for legislation destructive of civil liberties and labor and social security standards, while they seem obvious to us, are apparently doubtful for many students. Similarly, we may have been over-eager to link up points which we consider connected but which in the popular mind are dissociated. Objection to connecting the Good Neighbor policy with settlement...
