...Lucasfilm hit its dark age, after nearly a decade as the most profitable dream-mongering empire in movie history. By 1984 Lucas had produced five of the eight all-time top grossers. But that was a long time ago, in a land far, far away. Lucas' fantasies went murky (Labyrinth) or smirky (Howard the Duck), and his empire suddenly looked as frail as King Lear's. So Hollywood is closely watching Lucas' $35 million gamble on Willow. But will moviegoers watch? ...idea overwhelm the rest. And his sensible, good old Americanism, counterbalances his spacier side. On old Route 66 at Albuquerque's southwest edge is the Beach, a Navajo-blanket-pattern ed, neon- emblazoned apartment complex that, despite the glitz, has a strong sense of urbanity, a function of the labyrinth of outdoor stairways and corridors...
...most computer programs I know to ensure that the needs and interests of Eliot residents are met most equitably in their rooming assignments. Passengers aboard trains still pulling into the station pressed their faces to the windows and squinted against the smoke, spectators to a nightmare. Recalled Leroy Bigby, 23: "I could hear people screaming and running in every direction...
Boston's Blackstone Block is just such a marvelous chunk of city. Wedged between restored Faneuil Hall Marketplace and city hall, Blackstone Block is a seemingly haphazard labyrinth of buildings from several centuries strung along narrow, zigzagging streets. This jam-packed patchwork is, in extremely concentrated form, the natural look of cities, of anything created over time by many hands. Certain tacit rules apparently governed the 250-year accretion of buildings in Blackstone Block -- rules about material (red brick) and height (seven stories maximum) -- but within those constraints houses and workshops were demolished and built as circumstances demanded over...
