Hiltrud Schober, Pforzheim, Germany I agree with you on many points, especially the bureaucracy and the lack of efficiency in the E.U. Nobody would ever deny these shortcomings. Yet, I must firmly reject your suggestion that Europe should work harder to ease tensions in its sphere of interest, for instance in Bosnia, or reach out to the countries of North Africa, or cooperate with Turkey. Why don't you admit that it is the strategic interest of the U.S. to want other nations to be present in areas where the U.S. is not welcome...

Dennis Brinkeback, Stockholm In your article, Europe's biggest problem appears to be the lack of global power to rival that of the U.S. and China. But in fact, Europe's biggest problem is extensive power over its citizens, who at the same time have almost no influence over Europe's political system. Europe's Foreign Minister, Catherine Ashton, says in TIME that democracy and human rights are Europe's ideals. We have not seen much evidence of that...

Even acknowledging the lack of data, however, researchers like Dr. Scott Grundy of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas have long argued that statins should be prescribed to women at moderately high risk for heart disease. Grundy says the underrepresentation of women in drug trials does not discount statins' benefit; it results only in a failure to show a statistically significant effect. Grundy was one of the authors of the 2001 national guidelines for lowering cholesterol and the 2004 revisions that greatly expanded the use of statins - and were criticized because of his and other authors' ties...
