...actually assign a lot of blame for our recent troubles on a lack of interest-rate caps - that is, on the absence of strict usury laws. Why? Almost every state had usury laws in the 1920s, and they were circumvented one by one. Prohibitions against excessive interest started to disappear [South Dakota, for instance, loosened its laws in 1980], and once they did, the credit-card companies recognized a wonderful opportunity. They could charge as much as the market would bear, claiming that they had to charge more for bad credit risks. You can argue that's the democratization...
...their part, doctors say families as concerned as the Cohns are unusual. Most parents have a woeful lack of knowledge about basic nutrition. Doctors tell stories about patients who feed French fries and Cheetos to their children before their first birthday, for example. What's worse is that many families with overweight or obese children aren't even aware there is a problem...
...service's lack of portability has meant that most music fans still prefer downloading songs, sometimes illegally. Now Spotify wants to make streaming mobile. If the fact that people come from this continent precludes them from being able to work efficiently and independently—following deadlines, organizing lists, and thinking through problems instead of allowing them to sort themselves out, for example—then who will do that sort of necessary work for the African people? The evangelical...
...well worn Obama-Lincoln comparisons one more similarity: an apparent aversion to big birthday parties. The 16th President never celebrated his birthday in the White House, according to Lincoln biographer Emanuel Hertz. Obama, likewise, is ringing in his 48th on Aug. 4 with a decided lack of pomp. He dined, hooped and - ahem - bowled with friends at Camp David over the weekend, but he's spending the big day itself on the job, having lunch with Senate Democrats to discuss his Administration's accomplishments and goals. (No word on whether there will be cake.) Sure, it sounds like a snooze...
