...away Bikini's residual radiation. Lush vegetation once more covers the island. Through their long exile, most of it on inhospitable, isolated, mosquito-plagued Kili Island, the 300 or so Bikinians have huddled in a beachfront slum, longing for their beloved strand of islets around a life-sustaining lagoon. They still cannot go home. The U.S. Defense Department wants to keep Bikini for a test site should the nuclear-testban treaty ever break down...

Micronesia's 2,141 islands are so widely dispersed over 3,000,000 sq. mi. of cobalt-blue Pacific that Magellan sailed through their very midst without sighting a single one. In their glittering lagoons and rain-forested redoubts, the Japanese positioned their power to control all the Pacific in World War II-and the U.S. fight to thwart them made a litany and legacy forever of such unlikely flecks on the map as Kwajalein, Eniwetok, Saipan, Tinian and Peleliu. Such an invasion of bulldozers, concrete mixers and men, said the scientists, would irreversibly damage the ecosystem of the island. They added that the frigate birds would constitute one of the worst aircraft-collision haz ards in the world...

...Brown and Rutgers), the Adams Cup (from Pennsylvania and Navy) and the Compton Cup (from Princeton and M.I.T.). In New London, Conn., last month, they swept to their fifth straight victory over Yale, by the huge margin of seven boat lengths. And on New York's Hunter Island Lagoon two weeks ago, they outstroked Philadelphia's Vesper Boat Club, the 1964 Olympic champions, to 1) earn the right to represent the U.S. at next month's Pan American Games at Winnipeg, Canada and 2) prove that they are the best crew in the nation...
