...down by the leaders of New York City's four other boroughs, who had selected an opposition candidate in the person of Grover Aloysius Whalen, thus diminishing Tammany's otherwise fair chance of recovering the City Hall held for the last four years by Fusion Mayor LaGuardia (TIME, Aug. 2). Then Leader Dooling died and Tammany Hall perked up. In hope and harmony, expecting that a new Tammany chief would succeed in finding a compromise candidate to replace the two who threatened to split the Democratic vote, Tammany unanimously elected Representative Christopher D. Sullivan, 21 years a Tammany...
...year after he had urged that the U. S. send no athletes to the Olympic Games in Berlin (TIME, Nov. 4, 1935 et seq.). For that stand Mr. Mahoney, if nominated, could count on receiving a large Jewish vote, possibly offsetting a similar vote that fiery little Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia expects to receive for his anti-Hitlerism. And Mr. Mahoney could look for support from no less a personage than Franklin Roosevelt. Although President Roosevelt would probably like to see Administration enemies in Tammany thrown out forever, a formal denial was issued this week that he would take any hand...

...their own conviction of success. Where, they ask, in any great American city has a man without a machine succeeded in beating a machine? Only Dr. Copeland is perhaps without such placid assurance. The strength he musters must come from a battered Tammany machine, and from the antis-anti-LaGuardia, anti-New Dealers-a vote whose total is problematic. If Grover Whalen wins it will be an historic election. It will mean the end of Tammany as the machine in New York City politics. Barbaric conquerors from the provinces will tramp through Tammany's proud hall. But if LaGuardia...
Last week Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia's summer city hall (see p. 12) was mildly excited when a letter arrived from Rafael Espaillat de la Mota, Dominican consul general in New York, announcing that President Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina of the Dominican Republic was presenting to Mayor LaGuardia four solenodons. The mayor passed the word to the Park Department, which had never heard of solenodons. When the Barinquen docked with the solenodons, one male had died. Remaining were a male, a female and a baby. Captain Ronald Cheyne-Stout, Director of the Zoo picked up his three bedraggled specimens...
