...home of Director of Central Intelligence William Casey, whom North has depicted as a sponsor of the diversion scheme, just hours after the incriminating memo was found. Meese insisted that he did not discuss the transfer of funds to the contras with Casey. The Attorney General described a laid-back talk about the diversion with Vice Admiral John Poindexter, who told him, "Ollie has given me enough hints about this so that I generally knew, but I did nothing to follow up or stop it." Satisfied with that reply, Meese did not press the National Security Adviser on whether...
...seemed irrelevant for Southern legislators to argue that segregation was a matter that should be left to the states. The point was not of jurisdiction, but of the decision itself. Once the Southern states rights defense was laid bare as a defense of racism, it collapsed. Reason: he found shells in at least six layers of nests. Says Paleontologist Harley Armstrong of the Museum of Western Colorado: "This is a great detective story...
...Republican National Committee, which has been dizzyingly prosperous in the Reagan era, has suddenly fallen on leaner times. Faced with a $3 million shortfall in its $38 million annual budget, the committee last week laid off 40 of its 275 employees. Donations are down, say G.O.P. fund raisers, as a result of the Iran-contra scandal, disappointment with the Republican loss of the Senate last fall, and too many aspiring presidential candidates trolling for money from the same supporters...
