...Besides, said Medawar, "ALG is conceptually an archaic substance. Injecting horse-serum derivatives into human beings violates our sense of the fitness of things." It was Medawar's work in the early 1950s, which explained why some skin grafts in mice are rejected and others not, that laid the foundation for all today's transplant surgery. And now the transplant researchers are returning to work with the lowly mouse and guinea pig, to find a more satisfactory answer to the problem of rejection...

FROM the outset, the Czechoslovaks' remarkable campaign of passive resistance was aimed straight at their oppressors' vulnerabilities-their sense of direction, their stomachs and their morale. The tactics were laid down in one of the many variations of "the ten commandments of resistance" that went up on walls all over town: "We have not learned anything, we don't know anything, we don't have anything, we don't give anything, we can't do anything, we don't sell anything, we don't help, we don't understand...

Sterilization in All. To test their premise, the Czechs dripped solutions containing 1, 10 and 100 micrograms of DMF on three groups of ten male linden-bugs, then placed each group in a separate container with ten normal females. As the bugs mated, eggs laid by the females were carefully watched. None of those from females confined with males treated with 100 micrograms of DMF ever hatched. Few eggs from the 10-microgram group and only half from the 1-microgram group eventually hatched into larvae. Analysis of the females that had mated with the 100-microgram males proved that...

...belief in the morality of birth control. (The 1930 Lambeth Conference was the first major Christian assembly to approve contraception in principle.) Rejecting the conclusions of Pope Paul's encyclical Humanae Vitae, the bishops declared that the responsibility for deciding the number and spacing of children "has been laid by God upon the consciences of parents...
