Microsoft has decided to beard the lion in his lair and ask a federal appeals court flat out if a preliminary injunction prevents it from bundling the Internet Explorer browser into Windows 98. With the release date of Windows 98 fast approaching, Microsoft can't play chicken much longer. The company's spin on the matter makes the release of Windows 98 sound like some unpredictable natural phenomenon, like the migration of caribou, that would be unnatural to prevent, and Microsoft invokes the image of a pathetic, browserless Windows that "would bear little, if any, resemblance to Windows 98." ...Gipper can rest easy: The bear is very definitely dead -- smitten, in fact, by an elderly Russian woman out gathering wood. ITAR-Tass reported today that Nina Bogdanova of the village of Boborets was attacked by a bear that bit through her hand after she had accidentally entered its lair. Unfazed, Bogdanova whipped out a knife and stabbed the bear to death. She then went home and had a doctor stitch her up without anesthetic -- she's allergic to painkillers. So there may no longer be a bear out there, but there is one mean babushka...

Everybody knows that country is the last lair of sophisticated songwriting: character sketches, Ozark melodramas and, for the female singers, three-minute nervous breakdowns. Berg, 34, works expertly in all these genres and, like a backwoods Bruegel, portrays solitary figures going down in flames in teeming small-town landscapes. She peoples her sorority with the hopeful (Along for the Ride), the horny (Back in the Saddle--just try not to sing along) and a fine assortment of wistful waitresses. They commandeer the later songs on the album (Good Ol' Girl, If I Were an Angel, The Resurrection), toying with desperation...
