Although it's the company's only profit source, Clooney says the Ocean's franchise is finished, partly because corralling all the actors and stringing together the intricate plotline are too hard on Soderbergh and partly because capers, Clooney learned firsthand, are trickier than they look. During shooting, his Lake Como house was broken into four times by the same guys, who were after a safe. "The second time they came, they put Jergens lotion all over the hardwood floor to slide it out. At least I hope that's all they were using the lotion for," he says...
Sales of fish-oil supplements--one source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids--are booming and poised to climb even higher. The FDA says sellers of food products that contain two types of fatty acids, EPA and DHA, which are found in oily fish like salmon, herring and lake trout, can now add labels listing their EPA and DHA contents and touting their health benefits. But there are limits to how much fish oil you should eat. The FDA recommends no more than 3 g of the fatty acids a day, and only 2 g should come from supplements...
...just a handful of local radio stations would switch to an all-Christmas-music format a day or two before the holiday. Now, nearly 240 stations across the country have gone all Christmas, all the time, even before the Thanksgiving leftovers go dry. Two stations--KOSY in Salt Lake City, Utah, and KNEV in Reno, Nev.--even started spinning White Christmas as Halloween ended. "The decorations are around for a long time," notes Jim Ryan, program director at New York City's top-rated station, WLTW, one of no fewer than six in the New York metropolitan area that have...
...times may be changing. After a bruising annual-meeting season during which CalPERS wielded its $166 billion portfolio like a bludgeon, members of its board gathered in Lake Tahoe, Nev., in July to take stock. One invited speaker, Richard Koppes, a former CalPERS general counsel, delivered a blunt message. "Your friends think you're unfocused and too political," Koppes said. "They say you're beginning to damage the corporate-governance movement." CalPERS president Sean Harrigan, a grocery workers' union boss and an architect of the institutional investor's bare-knuckle strategy, got a more pointed message two weeks ago from...
...Olivier hid behind putty noses and funny accents. In Catch Me If You Can, DiCaprio's face was a blank check on which his character forged a career in duplicity. At other times, as in Gangs of New York, a rage can pop out like a monster in a lake. His face is too soft to be a tabula rasa; it is a pillow on which DiCaprio can embroider surprising emotions. That's why he is an actor, a gifted one, even more than he is a movie star...
