...this year, a foundation supporting Oregon's Lake Oswego school district has raised $1.6 million solely to fund teachers. The bulk of the fundraising was done through direct appeals - phone calls, e-mails, snail mail - and all money is spread out equally over the area's 13 schools through an agreement between the foundation and the district. Lake Oswego, an affluent bedroom community outside Portland, is able to leverage the wealth of its parents to help its 13 schools. "Our parents are willing to step up and provide money," says Bill Korach, Lake Oswego district superintendent. "But we are just...
...Jellyfish Lake, located on an uninhabited island an hour's boat ride from the town of Koror, is the only place in the world where you can safely float among translucent, undulating medusae. (See pictures of Australia's hidden islands...
...open to the sea, but it became cut off, trapping millions of jellyfish. Left in these protected waters, which are replenished through fissures in the limestone, the cnidaria evolved to primarily dine on the sugar produced by algae living in their cells. Knowing this may be small comfort as you ease into the lake, but once beyond the point of no return you will find yourself in a silent world taking in sights that would challenge the vocabulary of even the best...
Kakani Katija, a graduate student at the California Institute of Technology, believes it's possible, based on her recent experiments with jellyfish blooms in a freshwater lake in Palau. Using high-powered underwater lasers and video cameras, Katija and her team studied how the movement of jellyfish impacts the water around them. Researchers placed a fluorescent dye in front of the jellyfish and observed what happened as the jellyfish swam through it. To their surprise, rather than swimming through the dye, the jellyfish appeared to pick it up, tucking it in a space just behind their tentacles. As the jellyfish...
This epiphany certainly didn't happen overnight. Most states have sliced parks budgets for the better part of the past decade - in some cases shrinking ledger sheets by as much as 70%. In Colorado, for example, Bonny Lake State Park in the Eastern Plains near the Kansas border had been open year-round but will now be closed from October through April and will trim its staff from four employees to one. "At the same time we're cutting back, we have one of the fastest growing states in the country, full of people who come here for the beauty...
