...pace of the meet was set when Northeastern's cross country All-American, Bruce Bickford, ran a 4:03.89 mile to nose out Harvard's John Murphy and confirm coach Bill McCurdy's lament that "the close ones weren't going our way." On the brighter side of the race, Murphy, just coming off a bout with tendonitis, notched a personal best at 4:04 flat...

Those mournful lyrics from the Rolling Stones' rock classic Gimme Shelter touched a generation of troubled youngsters in the late 1960s. Today the lines might serve as a lament for affluent investors who are watching some of their tax shelters being blown away. The winds of change are coming from the Internal Revenue Service and Congress, which greatly restricted tax avoidance schemes in the Tax Reform Act of 1976, and continued the attack in the latest law, which becomes fully effective...

...Pierce stands out as the eminently bribable police chief, a bald-headed buffoon; so does Kathryn Falk as Lucy Brown, his daughter and Macheath's other wife. Falk's delivery of the pathetic "Barbara Song" was the best number of the evening. In most productions this is Polly's lament; I suppose Lucy took this one on after Polly got "Pirate Jenny." Playing a game of musical numbers like this may match singers up with the songs they can perform, but it also unties the music from the plot...

...says Richard G. Macadam, design vice president for Chrysler, echoing a lament made by many U.S. automen. The 1979 models that are now popping up in showrooms are geared as much to beating a legal deadline as they are to cruising smoothly down an Interstate. Congress has said Detroit must increase the average fuel-efficiency of its cars in steps to 27.5 m.p.g. by 1985, and for the model-year that is just beginning the requirement inches up to 19 m.p.g...
