...Aibel is right to lament the state of "puny, bland, generic" bagels at Harvard (column, Dec. 3). He would be glad to know, however, that the bagels at C'est Bon on Mass. Ave. are surprisingly warm, fluffy and flavorful. In fact, they sometimes almost pass for the real New York thing. But at the end of the day, the price of a real bagel is 85 cents plus round trip fare on the Delta Shuttle to New York. Not a bad deal--you get a free copy of "Foreign Affairs" on the flight. --Benjamin Lebwohl...

...diversity of J. Mascis' audience is any indication of his mainstream appeal, then perhaps grunge hasn't died the torturous death that its critics all seem to lament. If Mascis' music possesses any one quality, in fact, it is staying power: after 13 albums, (the first in 1985 with bassist Lou Barlow, who departed to create Sebadoh) he still gets the same screamed requests for the same four or five songs every set he plays. Although it must be a huge responsibility to be credited as one of the fathers of alternative rock, Mascis manages to keep churning...

Unfortunately, melodies have taken a back seat on Come To Daddy. Fans of the dark, spectral soundscapes on James's masterly Selected Ambient Works Volume II will lament the lack of comparable melodic beauty. Slower tracks such as "Flim" don't stand up as well on repeat listens, although they serve as welcome breaks between the aural roar of the louder songs...
