...roles, but mostly in the tits-and-zits teenpix that emulated Porky's. Cruise did time in a dim comedy, Losin' It (1982), about some lads who visit Tijuana to mislay their virginity; he played the sensitive one. From its plot synopsis, Risky Business (1983) promised more of the lame same. An affluent high school senior has an affair with a hooker (Rebecca de Mornay), dunks the family Porsche in Lake Michigan, turns his house into a brothel and still gets into Princeton. Sounds like the Reagan era in miniature. But there was wit in Paul Brickman's script...
...Mandela's A.N.C. comrades were pleased by the exchange. Many were similarly disgruntled over the July meeting with Botha, an encounter of less import, considering that Botha was a lame duck. Some A.N.C. members seem to object to Mandela's taking a supreme role in the organization, officially headed by the ailing Oliver Tambo, 72. Hall's one concession to talk-show tradition is to perform an opening monologue. His topical jokes are lame compared with Carson's or Jay Leno's, but he exposes himself in a way those cool satirists never do. Talking about Ralph Abernathy's book, in which the former civil rights leader made allegations about the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s sexual escapades, Hall barely disguised his anger. "He's just jealous," said Hall. "Probably hasn't been with three women in his life . . . Martin's still my hero. Right...
...political position on the primary issue of the fiscal crisis and the budget has been stregnthened [by the announcement]," says former Democratic State Senator George Bachrach. "But he has seen the limiting of his possible agenda on the peripheral issues." He said last week, "As a lame duck, he will be unable to make demands upon the legislature on many legislative and social issues that are of concern...
