...best tradition of Gilbert and Sullivan to update lyrics and dialogue to refer to contemporary events; that the sole efforts of this show are on the level of forcing the Grand Inquisitor to say things like "wicked awesome" and of a lame reference to Oprah will indicate the level of wit the show aspires to. There a few redeeming moments: the entrance of the Plaza-Toros is well staged and choreographer Susanna Witt's staging of the blind man's bluff dance is clever. Overall, however, the actors succeed by overcoming the direction, not because...

...massive refurbishment. Not just of the charred buildings but of the city's values, political leadership and sense of shared responsibility. It didn't last long. L.A.'s wealthy classes quickly fobbed off the burden of reconstruction to small volunteer organizations and an overstretched investment drive; the lame- duck mayor receded into city hall; the Federal Government turned its back; minority groups fumed about the patronizing attitude of their would-be helpers; police remained mostly unrepentant about the Rodney King beating; and gangs declared a truce but kept on selling drugs and robbing people...

In both cases, a written copy of the lecture material might make the presentations more rigorous, comprehensive and comprehensible...

...last week's parliamentary vote flickered across the TV screen, the numbers confirmed what all had suspected: the Socialist era was over in France. Mitterrand's party had been swamped by a right-wing tidal wave that swept up 460 of the 577 National Assembly seats and confronted the lame-duck President with the most lopsided conservative majority since the monarchy was restored...

...assess teaching fellows. Such a practice would represent a quick fix of "empowerment" to those students who care or are particularly disgruntled that would, in the end, be diluted by the general apathy and lack of inspiration in the average CUE response. A few particularly lame TFs would go to the woodshed on the third floor of the Science Center and the status quo would remain in place. The plan also makes Dean Buell look good while not creating any more work for his tenured colleagues in terms of their actually doing some of the evaluation...
