With the third album, Tracks takes a downward turn. "This Hard Land" is bright and memorable: It is especially easy to remember since Springsteen also included it--for reasons known only to Springsteen--on his Greatest Hits album. Several songs--such as "TV Movie" and "Part Man, Part Monkey"--are intended to be humorous and satirical, but Sprinsteen has always done best when conveying gentle humor and playfulness not through clever lyrics but through whimsical music, as in Born in the U.S.A.'s "Glory Days." Those who appreciate the hardscrabble optimist Springsteen of Joad will love "The Wish...
...Berg, a star of "Chicago Hope," is the latest refugee from television to land on the shores of Hollywood. This, presumably, is what gives Very Bad Things its one virtue: It does not look like television. This is partly because much of its content would be censored by all but the most `liberal' cable channels, but it's also because the director appreciates the one aspect of this medium that television completely lacks: the visceral possibilities of the big screen. Like Gulf War I, Gulf War II would begin with a strategic air campaign that would target all the tools that help Saddam keep his grip on power--and Saddam as well. If he survived the aerial onslaught, the land campaign would try to pin him and his loyalists down in greater Baghdad. As the U.S. Army tightened its noose around Saddam, he'd be tempted to unleash whatever nuclear, chemical and biological weapons he has squirreled away. While the war raged, Iraqi skies also would be filled with...
Palestinian leader YASSER ARAFAT'S outburst last week--threatening to renew the intifadeh and warning Israel "our rifles are ready"--seemed strange, given that the Knesset was debating a controversial land transfer to the Palestinian Authority. According to a senior aide, however, the Chairman's remarks, to a gathering of his Fatah organization, were meant for local consumption only. Arafat, says the official, is furious with the group's secretary-general, MARWAN BARGHOUTI, who has led an anticorruption campaign within Fatah that culminated in an anti-P.A. riot in Ramallah last month. The ferocious rhetoric, says the source...
