More often, Nin's tone is languid, dreamy; she clutters her stage with fin de siècle props and elegant clothes. Her potential lovers meet in artist's studios or Parisian sidewalk cafés. Traditional pornography gets to the point quickly, setting out the sexual ABCs with no nonsense. Nin, however, lingers over the calligraphy; she works as hard keeping her partners apart as she does bringing them together...

...flaws lie in Shakespeare's clumsy handling of the central plot. The two gentlemen, Proteus and Valentine, represent two conventional types of young Renaissance men: Proteus, the languid romantic, and Valentine, the seeker after honor. In the first scene, Valentine chides Proteus for wasting his youth on love and idleness before sailing for Milan to attend the Emperor--who later turns out to be a Duke in an odd but minor discrepancy. After an interlude with Proteus's lover, Julia, Shakespeare has Proteus sent off to Milan to follow in Valentine's footsteps...

...China-Viet Nam War wilted like a frostbitten blossom last week. China's 100,000 or so infantry and armored troops arrested their languid advance 15 to 20 miles inside the Viet Nam border, wheeled, and began a gradual, piecemeal withdrawal. Vietnamese artillery and front-line units of the 70,000-man-strong border defense force put on a show of hot pursuit but coolly refrained from any real, obstructive attack. Judging from the ferocity of each side's victory claims, it seemed safe to conclude that neither side had won-or lost...

Spring is a lyrical, intricate pas de deux for Kyra Nichols and Daniel Duell (who are husband and wife). It is the surest, most elegant part of the ballet. Summer, danced by Stephanie Saland and Bart Cook, is brief, languid and dreamy-it ends, in fact, with the couple dozing. Before that, however, they have hovered and swayed like goldenrod in their burnished costumes; this is a new and seemingly airborne partnership...

...languid tropical air of sunny Guadeloupe slows down most people, and Jimmy Carter seemed to be no exception. As he finished up his summit and brief holiday on the Caribbean island last week, he behaved, to all appearances, like any other vacationer: at ease in a time of turmoil. Carter, to be sure, was in the midst of digesting all the disturbing news abroad; he was preparing for the opening of the 96th Congress this week and conferring with advisers on the State of the Union address that he will deliver on Jan. 23. Even so, the usually talkative President...
