...speculative, even impractical mind, and notorious as a bad scientist, seizes on such sentences and enters them in a notebook crammed with similar apercus. In this act, and in its cause (here, Eddington's observation), the reader's temperament is revealed, a temperament at once impatient and imbued with languor, undiscipfiined and ordered. It conspires to receive all ideas as echoes of other ideas, on a diachronic level. In other words, whenever the reader happens to notice an idea which resonates through time, associations clamor like heirs to be recognized, and a number of them receive admittance...
...feral power. In the succeeding nine years, he has foundered in murky metaphysics (Tiny Alice), dabbled in adaptations (The Ballad of the Sad Cafe) and gone down experimental blind alleys (Box-Mao-Box). Instead of lunging for the jugular, as he once did, Albee has cultivated a Jamesian languor in his prose, a fastidious dandyism of manner, a dusty, librarefied reserve. Portentousness of delivery is used to mask vacuity of thought. In his latest play, All Over, we instantly recognize him for what he now is -the club bore...
...conformists he wrote about, and his bludgeoning style proved appropriate for depicting men of unexpected intelligence thrown into situations where long-hidden sensitivities are laid bare. As elsewhere, though, there was a sort of Dada contrast between incendiary violence and collegiate languor: couples walking hand in hand, playing tennis, spinning Frisbees, sailing across Lake Mendota. After one of many confrontations with the National Guard, a student shrugged nervously: "Well, I just threw my first rock." The atmosphere was entirely different at Grinnell College in Iowa. When protesters broke a window by accident, they collected $14.39 to replace...
...Langer in this Winter's games bes earned much publicity, most of it unfavorable for the NCAA. Officials of this organization probably never anticipated such developments, especially since a player as unsensational as Languor was involved. But as a result of their attempt to exert power, they may have lost more than they had hoped to gain. The Ivy colleges have unanimously declared themselves to be against the NCAA stand, and such open defiance doesn't do much to forward the athletic agency's attempts at authority...
