...mile run Harvard was represented by J. O. Nichols, Fenton, Blake and R. T. Fox; Yale by Morgan, Woodhull and Scoville. For three laps the men were closely bunched with Morgan slightly in the lead. The Yale men ran very cleverly and several times when the Harvard runners tried to break away they found themselves pocketed. On the last lap Morgan left the bunch followed by Fenton; Blake also was working up toward the front. From the reports of the time by Wight of Yale, it was expected that the race between him and Endicott would be very close but as the most of the spectators could not tell which was Wight, the positions of the men at the end of the first lap caused some doubt as to the final result.
