...Ernest Hemingway in The Green Hills of Africa The only other animal known to man as a self-devourer is the Communist Party, which, from time to time, may be observed consuming its own entrails. Last week in East Germany, the hyena jaws were relishing a larger mouthful than usual: Franz Dahlem, No. 3 German Communist. Lorraine-born Comrade Dahlem, a Communist delegate to the German Reichstag from 1928 to 1932, was an International Brigade commissar in the Spanish Civil War. Matter of Pride. Among the larger cities on the itinerary were New Orleans, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Denver. But the Boston also carried its flag into such towns as El Paso, Texas, Santa Barbara, Fresno, and Sacramento, Calif., and Provo, Utah. They know little about it, are clever in avoiding the use of technical terms-and might just as well be reporting cattle shows. The third group is much larger. Its members are quite hopeless-drooling, driveling, doleful, depressing dropsical drips. All English critics, without exception, are timid and conventional...

...Erwin Rommel, the lives of his men and of himself were secondary to the larger matter of military objectives. So, naturally, were the lives of enemies. Rommel tells in his own words of coming upon a "particularly irate" French lieutenant colonel whose car was "jammed in the press" of surrendering French in 1940: "I asked him for his rank and appointment. His eyes glowed hate and impotent fury ... I decided, on second thought, to take him along . . . But he curtly refused to come with us, so, after summoning him three times to get in, there was nothing...
