...bucolic Sussex countryside south of London, there's a farm where pheasants and peacocks roam wild. The yard is dotted with cows and chickens, horses and sheep, even reindeer. The owner designed the circular house himself. He built the chicken coops too. His wife is noted for her meatless lasagna and vegetarian burgers. They seem a nice couple, married 21 years, with four well-mannered kids...

...19th century mining camp, Troop 501 is eating dehydrated lasagna softened by boiling water and the evening's drizzle. It is oddly tasty. Bearded "miners" like Jedediah Ezekial Springfield (eagle scout Trey Berlin, 21, of Richmond, Ky.) offer to teach gold panning and to provide tours of the abandoned mine shaft; they speak in twangy "interpretive accents." After dinner, the miners put on a "stomp" with guitar music and surprisingly pungent jokes. Another day's hike leads to a cattle ranch set in a lush green valley. At that campfire, a talented cowboy-guitarist nicknamed Fluffy performs the Oreo Cookie...

...venue: the diner. After two years of planning, the fast- food giant has opened a one-of-a-kind outlet, the Golden Arch Cafe in Hartsville, Tenn., a small town northeast of Nashville. The 1950s-style restaurant, complete with jukebox, offers such unlikely McFare as lasagna, pork chops and Salisbury steak. The menu includes ordinary hamburgers, but no Big Macs or Chicken McNuggets. While patrons still queue to order their food at a take-away counter, the meal comes on ceramic plates, and is brought to the table by servers sporting bowling shirts...
