Scientists sort out X and Y carriers by tagging sperm with a fluorescent dye; under ultraviolet light, the X sperm glow brighter. Then the sperm are electrically charged -- positive for male, negative for female -- and a laser beam separates the two. Egg and appropriate sperm are mated in a glass dish, and the resulting embryo is implanted in a cow. The technique is about 90% reliable, which is pretty good odds for farmers to get more beef for the buck. Theoretically, a similar process could be developed for selecting human sex, though that ethical quandary does not appear imminent...

The on-screen tallies are instantaneous, thanks to laser-disc technology, and the majority rules. This first film (soon in seven more theaters), has 68 possible permutations. The result is a high-decibel headache . . . or funfest, depending on your age and inclinations. And if you don't like it the first time, just keep your seat. Maybe next time...
With an intellect unencumbered by a comparable ego, Stephanopoulos was able to bridge the chasm separating the campaign's often mismatched personalities. He made sure that Hollywood's laid-back producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, who made the convention bio-film, was on speaking terms with chain-smoking, laser-intense Grunwald; he doled out face time on television among aspiring talking heads; not least, he soothed the brilliant, tightly coiled gonzo strategist James Carville by watching infomercials and Julia Child with him when Carville was too nervous to work...
