With these properties, the Sandia scientists say, the ceramic will be useful in computers. Because its crystal orientation is determined by the last applied voltage, it is ideal for memory storage; its light-transmitting qualities can be used for computer read-outs and displays. Placed in front of a laser, the ceramic filter can block off the laser beam or let it through, depending on the amount of voltage applied. It can control the laser beam, much as a telegrapher's key modulates a radio wave, thus transmitting information...

Beginning early this year, Lippincott and co-workers from the university and the National Bureau of Standards analyzed samples of polywater with the aid of laser beams and one of the world's two double-beam microscope spectrometers. They found that the chemical bonds between polywaters hydrogen and oxygen atoms were always of equal length, which made them stronger than the bonds between atoms of a natural-water molecule. They also confirmed that polywater is a totally new substance with all the properties the Russians had claimed...

...wasn't always by accident. Her first film was a microscopic nightmare, Fantastic Voyage (her best line, to a leering Stephen Boyd: "I run the laser beam here. That should tell you where to keep your hands"). After that, Fox lent her to Britain's Hammer Film Productions for its reprise of One Million Years B.C. Says Raquel: "It was the kind of movie you do just to go to Europe and hope everyone will forget...

...That's the first thing. The Beatles not only generate enormous energy, but they direct it in a carefully chosen and strictly limited manner so that nothing is wasted.
