Disorganized, depressed, and debilitated, the Southern bloc in the Senate had faint hope of blocking the Administration-backed voting-rights bill. But last week, more for the record than anything else, the Southerners made their ritual try. The last-gasp effort was somehow symbolized by Mississippi's respected John Stennis, who had scarcely warmed to his subject when he clutched his throat, staggered slightly, fell into his seat. "Get me some water," he gasped to alarmed Senate aides. As it turned out, Stennis had suffered only a temporary throat spasm - a hazard of the trade - and soon recovered...
...last-gasp Crimson effort was a spectacular show. With six Eagles playing back for pass defense, Zimmerman hit Ron Kram, then Carter Lord, and finally Welz to put the ball on the B.C. 24. On the fourth attempt a swarm of rushing linemen dragged Zimmerman down. The gun sounded before the Crimson could run another play...
...their final, last-gasp effort, the Southern segregationists made a motion that could have required the Senate clerk to read the record of the entire 68-day "legislative day" since formal debate on the bill began-some 6,000,000 words in all. The motion was defeated, 73 to 18, and at long last it was time for the historic vote...

Show has cost him $6,000,000 in its three years of life, and although both circulation and ad revenues are up this year, the magazine is falling into the hole by $100,000 per issue. Hartford has tried to sell, but can't find a buyer. On the boss's orders, Show's President Frank Gibney cut the staff from 70 to 30 hands and aimed at turning the corner into black ink by 1965. But then Hartford impatiently...
...Gaulle's nuclear experts and modern warfare men, however, were appalled. They insist that France's nuclear force will be only a deterrent, or else a last-gasp weapon; if they fail to deter, and France is falling, then and only then are the bombers to be used to drag the attacker under with France. They cannot be used on routine, tit-for-tat bombing missions as the war games suggested. As for the frantic, 15-weapon battlefield broadside, so lavish a use of atomic weapons in so small an area (particularly on French soil) amounted to nothing...
