Billionaire George Soros wants to show you his softer side, but his latest philanthropic initiative is a bit of a head snapper. Soros is announcing today a $35 million donation to benefit underprivileged New York State children to the tune of $200 each. Literally. His gift will help fund a program dubbed "Back to School New York" and will allow the state to access about $140 million additional dollars in stimulus funds that are available to programs that fund needy families. A one-off donation, Soros' largesse is supposed to help kids purchase back-to-school supplies, though some critics...
Have you seen the latest Star Trek film? I haven't. Abrams sent me a message through the Web - what was it, Twittered me? No. YouTubed me? No, what has he done? E-mailed me. He e-mailed me saying he heard that I hadn't seen the movie and he'd set up a private screening, and I declined the private screening and told him I'd buy him dinner...
...should come as no surprise that Yang's latest work, co-authored by Korean-American comic artist Derek Kirk Kim, revisits those dark places where feelings of self-doubt and shame linger. But rather than centering on ethnic identity this time, The Eternal Smile's trilogy straddles the line between reality and fantasy. But, as Grant's Interest Rate Observer, an influential Wall Street newsletter, points out in its latest issue, "Massive injections of money and credit ... are always bullish before they are bearish." The newsletter draws worrying parallels between China's current credit boom and the gush of lending that produced the U.S. housing bubble, the collapse of which devastated the financial sector and triggered the global credit crisis...
...Jersey TAKE THAT, TONY SOPRANO In a state long tainted by graft, New Jersey's latest scandal may top them all. After a 10-year probe reaching from Hoboken to Israel, federal agents slapped 44 people with criminal charges. The allegations read like a movie script: assemblymen and mayors took bribes in diners and parking lots; rabbis laundered millions through Jewish charities; a man tried to sell a kidney to an FBI informant. The fallout has been equally cinematic: the mayor of Secaucus resigned July 28, and the same day, another accused official was found dead in suspicious circumstances...
