...consistently, and forced the ball down the field for the only touchdown of the afternoon, it was clearly outplayed by the second eleven. Big holes were opened continually in the first eleven's line, through which advances aggregating nearly 100 yards were made in the first half alone. The latter part of the game showed some improvement, and the slow charging and lack of aggressiveness was partly overcome. As a rule, however, the backs started too slowly, formed a ragged interference, and hindered each other. All the plays seemed badly in need of smoother execution...

...permanent. Winslow will be the regular quarterback in case the coaches should decide to move Metcalf. Ward has played right halfback throughout the season but last week marked a falling off in the quality of his play. Allen and Vander Poel are prominent candidates for this position. The latter has proved himself throughout the week's practice to be the most reliable punter on the squad. His general work has also improved. Whether Bowman or Farmer will play fullback is still an unsettled question. Bowman was given the preference in the West Point game but did not make a very...

With six members of the championship eleven last year out of the game, the outlook for a strong team this fall was not very encouraging. About a hundred men came out as candidates for the team during the latter part of September, but among the number were few players of the necessary weight, activity, or aggressiveness. Many of the men lacked experience and to develop out of such material a team which would stand the test of championship games was a serious problem to the coaches. The squad was gradually reduced, however, and a team picked which has managed...

...twice failed to punt well out of danger and both times Carlisle was enabled to get inside of Harvard's 20 yard line. Timely fumbles prevented a score and no other chance was offered. Just before the end of the half long runs by Kernan and Marshall gave the latter an opportunity on the 30 yard line to try a goal from the field which was missed by a narrow margin...

...Wilhelmi, halfback on the 1901 eleven. Whether either of these changes will be permanent is of course largely a matter of conjecture. Kinney is large and strong and is valuable in tackle-back formations; but as a defensive tackle he is at present inferior to Hogan. The latter has also the advantage of experience in the position. Wilhelmi, although considerably heavier than the average end, is nevertheless fast. He is, however, very inexperienced in the duties of the position, and constant coaching will have to supplement his natural ability to make him even a fair and for the championship games...
