...concept of speed ultimately loses momentum. Small wonder, perhaps, given that the two most important Italian art movements of the second half of the 20th century, Arte Povera and Transavanguardia, were the antithesis of all things speedy: the former championed the use of humble, often recycled materials while the latter marked a return to painting after it fell out of fashion during the postmodern art movements of the '60s and '70s. And surely it is no mere cultural accident that Italy's biggest recent contribution to the international Zeitgeist is Carlo Petrini's Slow Food movement...

...decelerated or reached a plateau. One such study shows that rates of premarital intercourse for students at the University of California at Davis rose sharply to 62% by 1977 and then increased to only 64% by 1981. Said Ann Clurman, a vice president at Yankelovich, Skelly & White: "In the latter part of the decade, we see a slowing down in support for the sexual revolution. People are reassessing. ...That latter scenario is what Sheikh Usman Rishad, a 25-year-old blanket, pillow and mattress manufacturer, is hoping for. The former Musharraf supporter was up all last night decorating his 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer in honor of Sharif's election symbol, the tiger. He glued fuzzy cream blanket material over the midnight blue exterior, and painstakingly painted it with tiger stripes. The windows and bumpers are trimmed with black feather boas. "I decided to do this for my leader," he said of his masterpiece. "Sharif is going the right way for Pakistan." Musharraf, he says, brought Pakistan suicide bombers...

Time and again, given the choice between an actor who does great work as a meanie and another who does good work as a cutie or victim, Oscar went for the latter. Marlon Brando's Stanley Kowalski in the 1951 A Streetcar Named Desire is one of the major revolutionary performances in movies; it announced the arrival of the Method actor and the sexy brute in one galvanizing package. Yet Brando lost to Humphrey Bogart in The African Queen. The Academy went for old style over new, as it did in withholding Oscars from Brando's more sensitive brethren, Montgomery...

...anti-Moscow ruling coalition between Yushchenko and Premier Yuliya Tymoshenko. The two politicians who have waged a four-year struggle for leadership of the coalition take different positions on the gas issue: Tymoshenko demands that Ukraine raise transit prices for Russian gas and dump Rosukrenergo as a supplier. The latter campaign received a vigorous boost, late last month, when alleged crime boss Semyen Mogilevich, wanted by the U.S. on fraud and extortion charges, and long suspected of owning Rosukrenergo, was arrested in Moscow. Tymoshenko insists that Mogilevich stands behind the Rosukrenergo/Gazprom arrangement, although he and his lawyers vigorously deny...
