...album, contrasting sharply with the next two tracks, "Cast No Shadows" and "Ordinary Night," both of which are quiet, meditative songs that could almost lull one to sleep. But the album does contain some promising music. Noteworthy tracks include "Last Weeks of the War" and "City of London," the latter of which contains traces of the Mekons' punk roots. The melodic voice of Sally Timms also deserves much praise; it's a shame she doesn't sing the lead vocals for more of the songs...

...some ways, Bridget resembles a latter-day version of Henry Fielding's Tom Jones, caught as she is a picaresque series of adventures and winning goodwill from both other characters and readers by dint of sheer charisma (and some aid from Mark Darcy). Admittedly, those adventures include perhaps the weak point of the novel, when Bridget is framed for smuggling drugs in Thailand, which seems to be the excitement-and-terror locale du jour (see Brokedown Palace or The Beach). Out of urban London, Bridget's neuroticism seems hopelessly out of context: for all her moaning in her diary...

Sohn's comparison of the implications of the slash to a boxer delivering a fatal blow in the ring is off-base. A better comparison might be to a boxer delivering a blind-sided swift boot to the head of his opponent while the latter makes his way back to his corner. Sticks to the head are far from the type of actions that he claims the NHL has "tacitly allowed...since its inception." Most fans of the game don't "buy tickets expecting a WWF-like performance."
