...good cholesterol" you hope will turn up in your blood test has that name for a reason. More properly known as high-density lipoprotein (HDL), it can prevent the damage done by its evil twin, low-density lipoprotein (LDL). The latter clogs blood vessels by combining with oxygen to form a substance that sets off alarms in the immune system. ...gorgeous, gasp-inducing spectacle. And most of the time, it works dramatically. The fable of Simba the lion cub, who believes he has caused his father's death and exiles himself out of shame, is perhaps the most powerful of all the Disney latter-day cartoon myths. The story still depends too much on the exaggerated villainy of Simba's uncle Scar (John Vickery, nicely reprising Jeremy Irons' silky voicing of the character in the film); can't a kid disobey his father without help? ...year older and still bemused by his good fortune, Ambrose is following up his 1996 breakthrough with three volumes, two new and one newish. The latter, the hefty American Heritage New History of World War II (Viking; 628 pages; $50), was first published in 1966 with text by the late New York Times correspondent C.L. Sulzberger and photographs culled from international archives. It was an elegant memorial to the war's unimaginable destruction, anguish and fortitude. Ambrose furthers that tragic sense in his revision, which includes updated material on code breaking, Japanese war crimes and Hitler's atom-bomb project...

President Hosni Mubarak has asked his Interior Minister to resign, despite the latter?s good record in the fight against Islamic extremists. But the massacre highlights an intractable problem for the authorities. ?The government have made it very clear that they will not negotiate with the militants,? says Radwan. ?They?ve been using harsh measures up to now, but it hasn?t stopped such attacks ? which are easy for even only a handful of people to carry out.? Radwan believes the most important factor undermining popular support for the militants has been Egypt?s tourism-driven economic recovery. Which...
