...Lake City, Utah, on a block known informally as Welfare Square, stands a 15-barreled silo filled with wheat: 19 million lbs., enough to feed a small city for six months. At the foot of the silo stands a man--a bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints--trying to explain why the wheat must not be moved, sold or given away...
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE The Netherlands had more than half the world's merchant ships. It ruled trade and shipping not just in Europe but throughout Iberia, Africa, Asia and South America, led by the famed Dutch East India and Dutch West India companies. (A forerunner of the latter founded New York City.) Amsterdam became the global financial capital; Dutch workers' wages were Europe's highest. The link between freedom and entrepreneurship was not lost on Adam Smith when he wrote of the virtues of free-market economics...
...Christmas, better for your diet than Thanksgiving, and it's easier on your lazy summer schedule than Easter because there's no sense in having a sunrise fireworks service. I suppose the Fourth of July's nearest relative is New Year's Eve, but they're distant cousins: the latter doesn't have the same roots in community and country that the former does. Even though it's the most--the only--political major holiday, it is unique as one of the most widely celebrated by America in all of its diversity. All but the most radically liberal...
More irritating is the sidelining of the black characters, "Ol' Man River" notwithstanding. One especially grating moment involves a little exchange between Cap'n Andy, the proprietor of the Cotton Blossom, and the wise slave Queenie in which the latter, in response to Andy's grumbling that the balcony seats aren't selling, asks him "What about colored folks?" and launches into a ballyhoo aimed exclusively at said "colored folks." However, both Gretha Boston, who won a Tony award for her performance as Queenie, and Andre Solomon-Glover as Queenie's husband Joe, establish considerable presence that prevents their characters...
...Spanish fossils, though nearly twice as old, show a mix of modern and Neanderthal facial traits. According to the new genealogy, H. antecessor evolved in Africa and gave rise to H. heidelbergensis and another, still undiscovered species. The former begat Neanderthals; the latter led to modern H. sapiens. Not all paleoanthropologists are convinced. But if this theory holds up, the human family tree has just grown another branch...
