...policy marked out last year by the men who have undertaken to bring Harvard to the top in rowing, Captain Bullard will, in a few days, have a selected 'varsity and a selected freshman crew on the river for fall practice. Mr. Watson will coach the crews from the launch, John Harvard. The men for the 'varsity crew will be chosen by Captain Bullard without making a general call for candidates. He has a good idea of all the available material in the three upper classes, and from these he will pick his men. From the freshmen who present themselves...
...lower half of the course, at about slack water tonight, Harvard covered two miles under 11 minutes, but it is doubtful if that pace could be continued through four miles. Harvard did not attempt to continue it, but stopped and Watson coached them from the launch. Yale rowed her best time on the upper course tonight, when she struck a fast gait and rowed far up the river. Yale remained almost within hailing distance of quarters and in the waters of the cove just above Gale's Ferry, a section which has always been a favorite practice ground for the Yale crews. A strong southerly breeze...

They have a Waters shell just like that of the 'varsity, only lighter as the latter was especially built for a heavy crew. They will be coached at New London by either Hartwell, Ives, or some other of the 'varsity coaches...
...rowing being over short stretches to correct and perfect their stroke. The practice was all on the upper end of the course and above their quarters, a section of the river where the crews work is somewhat secluded from observation, and where the water is perfectly still. The Harvard launch came down to the lower end of the course this evening, leaving the crew at work above. The course has not yet been wholly flagged as the parties who are to place the stakes, and the colors are not ready. Steamer Skipjack has all the material aboard for marking...
