With its black frame, red Naugahyde base and transparent plastic panels, it looks like a cross between a recreation-room bar and an aquarium. Its blue- tinted towers, washed by 200 gallons of liquid coolant, bubble and shimmer / like over-heated Lava Lites. Its nickname is "Bubbles," and it bears little resemblance to the computers that most Americans have seen. But the $17.6 million Cray-2 is a computer -- a supercomputer at that -- and it is the fastest one in operation today...

...word neo-expressionism is misapplied to American art in the '80s. The marks that convey heaviness and heat -- turgid, lava-like floods of paint, fulgurous color, primitive and mythic imagery, and the like -- are, as any art student knows by now, conventional signs that can be (and usually are) manipulated as lightly and coldly as Coke bottles in a Warhol. In this republic, the "expressive" comes down to another form of pop art, retooled for an audience strung out on fictions of personal authenticity...

Cucchi made end-of-history folk art, full of skulls and torrents of lava, cemeteries and crowing cocks. Chia, in a melange of 20th century styles ranging from early Mussolini to late Chagall, did ladylike coal heavers expelling wind while floating in postures vaguely derived from classical statuary. And Clemente? Somewhat more elusive, various and parody resistant: a survivor. The three Cs are now reduced to two, if one can judge from the abysmal quality of Chia's New York show last winter--whimsies impacted into cliche by the stress of overproduction. This month Clemente is on stage, blanketing Soho...

...idea of fun. In Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Spielberg's slam-bang sequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark, a man's heart is ripped out of his chest in a ritual sacrifice, and he is lowered alive into a pit of molten lava. In Gremlins, a fantasy co-produced by Spielberg and directed by Joe Dante, a boy's cuddly, otherworldly pet spawns a generation of vicious creatures that, in one scene, terrorize the boy's mother in the kitchen. She retaliates by churning up one gremlin in a food processor...

...mountain kept stoking the 2,000° F flow. For a while, one stream crept toward the isolated, minimum-security Kulani prison camp. For almost three hours, 20 guards and 75 prisoners were without electricity after power was cut off to be rerouted to other areas affected by the lava flow. Some Hilo residents remained unworried and held "housewarming" parties; others looked up at the looming lava and decided to evacuate the area temporarily...
