...couldn't call the witnesses he wanted. The judge declared that the family of Thomas Youk, to whom Kevorkian had given a lethal injection, would raise the consent of the patient as a defense--one that was irrelevant in a murder case. Four times in the past, Kevorkian's lawyer Geoffrey Fieger (whom Kevorkian did not want representing him in this case) had beaten assisted-suicide charges by arguing that the ex-pathologist had only been relieving the suffering of the patients, who administered their own suicides. ...While still a student, he fell in love with and married Mirjana Markovic, daughter of a distinguished partisan and party family, and together they climbed her connections up through party ranks. Educated in the law, he filled high posts at Tehnogas and Beobank, but he was not really a lawyer, technician or banker. He was a party "fixer." A key prosecution witness, who later recanted, now says police threatened him into testifying against Porter...
Drawing upon his experience as a professional pitchman (Hertz) and murder defendant (Trial of the Century), O.J. SIMPSON has taped a series of ads for Justice Media, a lawyer-referral service. Simpson says the offer to appear in the television commercials interested him because the ads are aimed at minorities, who often don't have enough money or connections to get first-class attorneys. "The main thing I have learned is you can't walk into a courtroom without competent legal representation," Simpson told the Associated Press. The ads have yet to appear, but Justice Media plans to sell them...
