Once again, freshman guard Erin Maher was deadly from the outside. Maher has established herself as one of the most devastating three-point shooters in the Ivy League, and she continued her long-range barrage Saturday night, sinking three treys like they were lay-ups to spark the Crimson offense in the first half. Maher finished with 16 points. Maura Healey and Dina Hadrick also hit double figures, adding 10 points apiece...

...much for hope, so much for promises. Last week Haiti lay in the grip of "a state of siege" declared by Avril's government and launched by his 1,200-man Presidential Guard. Citing "an increase of violence," the regime claimed that the crackdown was necessary to "protect the democratic accomplishments against terrorism." In dubious pursuit of that goal, Avril's police and some members of his army embarked upon a frightening expedition, beating up critics of the regime, silencing the media and sweeping up political opponents -- jailing some, exiling others...

Come out and face the occupation forces as true soldiers of Islam." By the thousands, Muslim separatists answered the call last week. Security forces replied first with tear gas, then with rifle fire. By week...

Examining the Bay Area output today, viewers will recognize strong affinities to later styles. Brown's dense canvases helped lay the groundwork for San Francisco's subsequent funk explosion; Park's blank-faced male nudes anticipated Eric Fischl's anxious, naked suburbanites. Much of the vigorous Bay Area brushwork was reflected, more than a quarter-century later, in paint- happy neoexpressionism. Despite some occasional heavy-handedness, though, the works displayed in this show are far more engaging than their irony-loaded grandchildren...

...late 1988, as Emperor Hirohito lay dying, Nagasaki Mayor Hitoshi Motoshima broke a widely observed taboo by criticizing the once deified leader. "I experienced military life," said Motoshima in response to a question in the city assembly, "and I believe the Emperor had responsibility for the war." Last week the 67-year-old mayor paid for that statement, very nearly with his life. As Motoshima stepped out of city hall, a gunman shot him in the lung from behind. At week's end the mayor was in stable condition...
