Baffling Phenomenon. Acanthaster's ravages not only occur quickly but are long-lasting. After stretching itself over the coral, the crown-of-thorns quickly digests the simple organisms that constitute the tough outer layer of the reef. Structurally weakened, the remaining skeletons are easily eroded by the ocean's waves. Once the coral barriers are breached, the islands that they surround are no longer protected from the pounding of the open sea. Because the reefs are vital to the spawning and feeding of much undersea life, the process can also destroy fertile fishing grounds almost overnight...
...archaeologists have identified at least a dozen different layers within Schliemann's hillside. None of these historic Troys, Berve savs, would in any way be familiar to the Iliad's readers, except that they overlooked a plain near the Aegean Sea. In fact, the layer that most closely coincides with the date suggested by Homeric scholars for the Trojan War (circa 1200 B.C.), and that is known as Trov VI to archaeologists, seems entirely improbable as the battle site. At one level, a thick layer of ash provided grisly evidence that Assyrian King Tiglath-pileser III had put Hazor to the torch...
...dotted by a series of heavily guarded military checkpoints. In the surrounding hills, thousands of troops are emplaced to block the traditional north-south invasion route. Along the 151-mile-long DMZ itself, more than 300,000 U.S., South Korean and allied troops stand guard, backed by a layer of Hawk and Nike Hercules antiaircraft missiles...
...renewal, planning and zoning convinced him that taxes do more than anything else to shape man's environment. "I'm more than upset," he says, "at how badly real estate taxes have been misused over the years. It's like peeling an onion-you take away layer after layer and uncover an interconnected nest of unintended social and economic evils. And federal taxes simply compound these evils...
